The impact of courier-, express- and parcel (CEP) service providers on urban road traffic: The case of Vienna

Current urban city logistics literature often claims that rising e-commerce and the associated courier-, express- parcel- (CEP) deliveries are inherently responsible for increase in road traffic related congestion, disturbances delays within cities. However, existing research is so far limited concerning studies to what extent CEPs impact contribute traffic, particularly comparison with other commercial sectors passenger cars. In response, collecting data through an extensive empirical survey, counting of Vienna Austria, this paper identifies share selected categories vehicles. Results show consists merely 0.8 per cent, while delivery vans’ craftsmen/technicians almost eight times bigger 6.0 cent. Overall, vehicles comprise 13.5 cent total Vienna, thus policies reduce should include not only sectors, but also focus on cars comprising majority 86.5 traffic. This first study specifically investigates vehicle context logistics.
